About Try on Fly

"TRY on Fly" is based in Queensland, Australia and caters for the sport of flyfishing with an emphasis on saltwater and freshwater impoundment applications conducting tuition classes in both casting and fishing skills.

Nial Logan. Nial is an internationally recognised FFF accredited casting instructor, with a wealth of knowledge gained through spending many years in remote areas of northern Queensland. His particular skill is sight casting to fish from the shore, beach or boat and has introduced many beginners to the joys associated with this form of fishing.

He has been instrumental in the introduction of a Junior Development Program into a number of Sunshine Coast schools that now sees over 100 juniors participating annually. Besides fishing and casting skills, Nial is also a proficient fly tier and has developed a number of unique tying patterns that have proved effective for many local saltwater fish species.

Comments about the Courses

"Thoroughly enjoyed the course. It was very comprehensive and the information was put in easy to understand language." CA

"I bought some gear and read some books and tried to teach myself. I now realise that this action was a waste of time and most of the things I was doing were wrong. How easy it is when you are shown the right way. Thanks for a great day." GG

"The hour spent sorting out my problems was well worth it. I hadn't realised I had developed some many bad habits that were starting to make me frustrated. Having the reason for the faults clearly explained made it a lot easier to make the corrections." SE

"Having the handout manual to refer back to is a great idea. There is so much information covered during the course it is hard to remember it all." WP

"I enjoyed our session on Friday tremendously.  Amazingly my arm's ok - which means you taught me right!!  Thanks for being a patient teacher, I am very happy now with my fly casting.  Distance will come soon enough, now that I've learnt to focus on getting the loop right instead of the distance." To Whom it May Concern

Nial Logan has organised a fly fishing unit for approximately twenty four of our Year Six and Seven students in Term Four during 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 running for seven weeks as part of the school’s Recreational Sport Program. I have been fortunate enough to accompany these groups of students for the full seven weeks while under the instruction of our fly fishing experts.

I have been very impressed with the level of professionalism demonstrated by the instructors and all students have responded positively to their friendly and enthusiastic manner. The learning that has taken place over the courses has been very satisfying for me as an educator. The level of skill demonstrated by the students at the completion of the course has been a very high for the age of the children involved – a consequence of effective teaching by the instructors.

Our instructors are always on time with equipment at the ready and always take interest in each child’s progress. I also impressed by the fact that each child participating in the course receives a certificate of completion (and what a magnificent certificate it is). Feedback from students and parents has been positive with many students enquiring as to when the courses will be offered again.

I rate the fly fishing course organised by Nial very highly and have recommended it to my colleagues. In fact, Nial accepted an invitation to address all of the Primary Physical Education Teachers at a network meeting in July 2003 about the fly fishing course.

Thank you Nial for allowing our students to experience the wonderful world of fly fishing, an opportunity they might otherwise miss out on.

Yours in fishing
Sheldon Boland (Physical Education Teacher)
