Instructions: 2. Start monofilament thread behind eye and wind back to the bend. 3. Hand-stack a small bunch of buck tail, trim to about 3cm long for #2 and 2 cm for #4. Tie in at the bend and wrap the butts down around the bend. This will ensure that they point downwards on the finished fly. 4. Take a short length of hard mono (10lb Mason) and bend it 15mm from the end. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze the bend to make a sharp angle. Tie the end of the mono on top of the binding for the bucktail. 5. Select 3 or 4 strands of flash, double around thread and bind down over the hook point and part evenly around the mono. 6. Use the dark brown thread to put 12 - 15 close wraps around the end of the rattle. Apply head cement and trim thread. Locate the rattle on top of the hook shank with the brown section at the start of the bend and secure in place. Adjust position to ensure it is directly on top of the hook shank and apply head cement to secure. 7. Pull the mono back over the rattle until the desired head shape is achieved and tie down. Trim off the excess. Attach the burnt mono eyes on top of the rattle with the thread stopping over the front of the rattle. The eyes should angle outwards and extend about 1cm past the end of the mono loop. Note – keep binding to a minimum to avoid having a lump where the materials are attached. 8. Cut 10 - 12 strands of sea hair from the hank, double and cut and pull some of the strands out slightly from one end. Use a toothpick or bobkin to smooth a little of the prepared silicone onto the tapered end. Smooth between thumb and forefinger to get a tapered point. 9. Place the prepared sea hair on top of the rattle so that the tapered end extends just past the eyes and bind down along the length of the rattle using spiral wraps. It should sit directly on top of the mono loop. 10. Hold the butt ends of the sea hair out of the way and move the thread to behind the hook eye. 11. Hold the hair together to prevent it from spinning around the hook bind down behind the hook eye. Whip finish, cement and cut thread. 12. Apply a light coat of the prepared silicone over the body up to the front of the mono loop to hold materials in place. Hold the "feelers" together and fill the mono loop with silicone. Rotate to prevent sagging. Take care not to allow leaching into the front legs. 13. Apply successive coats until the body shape is obtained. While the last coat is still tacky, apply the tips of some rabbit fur or Polafibre to both sides of the underbody to form the back legs. To form the tail, divide the sea hair in half and wipe on a light coat of silicone. Draw between the thumb and forefinger to flatten and form a V shape. 14. When the fly is completed and cured apply a light coat of hard as nails (clear nail polish). 15. Trim the tail by cutting inwards at 45 degree angle. |
