Saltwater Fly Pattern

ASSASSIN

Original pattern by Paul van Reenan

This pattern has proved very popular in close to cover such as mangroves. The hook point up orientation makes it reasonably snag free.

Hook:
#2 to 5/0 Mustad 3400 or Gamakatsu SL12S

Thread:
Monofilament

Materials:
Gill – pink or orange Flourofibre
Wing – Flashfibre (mix of Kinkyfibre and Comes Alive) or Steve Farrar's Flashblend
Topping – Contrasting colour of Flashfibre or Flashblend
Eyes – 3D silver/black, yellow/black, red/black

Instructions:

1. Set hook in vice as normally. Start thread behind eye and lay down a base about 1cm long.

2. Tie in gill of Flourofibre slightly back from the hook eye.

3. Select the belly colour of Flashfibre/Flashblend, taper it and cut to length.

4. Tie in directly behind the hook eye – don’t overbind.

5. Add topping colour for back on top of the last tie. Whip finish and trim thread.

6. Grip the whole of the head area and turn the materials through 180 degrees so that they are on the bottom of the shank.

7. Check the symmetry of the fly by looking at it from the front – all the materials should be aligned with the shank.

8. Add a drop of head cement to the thread finish behind the eye.

9. Attach the 3D eyes with Zap-a-Dap (contact adhesive). To prevent the head becoming glued solid, slip a piece of paper between the eyes and work it down between the materials until it touches the hook shank. Leave in place until the glue has cured. Done this way, the head will collapse on the strike to allow a clean hook up.

10. Trim materials to 3D shape.

Notes:
The flies pictured have a few turns of lead wire added before the materials to achieve a head first sink orientation.
