Saltwater Fly Pattern

BOOBY FLY

Originator unknown

This fly was originally developed in the UK where it proved very successful on trout. The design makes it very versatile for many species. For example, it can be fished on a floating line around snags for such species as bream and saratoga or on a sinking line over weed beds for bass.

Hook:
For Bream - #4 to #6 Gamakatsu SL45 or #2 SL12S

For Saratoga - #2 Gamakatsu B10S or Mustad Stinger

Thread:
white flat waxed

Materials:
Tail - white rabbit fur
Body - ice estaz chenille
Head - round closed cell foam or bean bag foam secured in stocking (See pics below)
Eyes - Silver /black prismatic

Instructions:
1. Lay down a base of thread from the hook eye to the bend and finish with the thread behind the eye.

2. Cut off a 10mm length of foam with a sharp blade  Centre the foam on the hook shank and tie in about a hook eye width behind the eye using figure of eight wraps. Apply a little head cement or super glue to the threads to secure. Wrap thread back to the hook- bend.

3. Attach a bunch of rabbit fur over the hook barb and wrap back to the bend.

4. Tie in body wrap at the hook bend and transfer thread back to hook eye.

5. Using close wraps but not overlapping, wrap body material around shank back up to the hook eye and tie off and trim excess.

6. If desired, apply the eyes to the cut ends of foam using contact adhesive or alternatively just stick the eyes on and cover with Softex to secure.

TO ATTACH BEAN BAG FOAM

1. Wrap some stocking over 2 balls of foam and secure end of stocking to hook shank.

2. Put half a dozen figure of eight wraps between the eyes to secure the eyes.

3. It the eyes tend to push down the side of the hook shank, put three wraps of thread around the stocking between the foam and the hook shank.
