SYNTHETIC SIMPLE CLONE
Variation of original pattern by Bob Popovics
This style of fly can be tied in varying sizes from 2 inches to 12 inches and is suited to a wide variety of species.

Hook:
2/0 to 8/0 Mustad Big Gun or Gamakatsu SL12S
Thread:
Monofilament
Materials:
Belly – white Kinkyfibre and UV arctic pearl sparkleflash
Lateral Flash – pearl flashabou
Topping – pale blue and UV blue pearl sparkleflash, royal blue, purple and black Kinkyfibre
Gill – red streamer hair
Eyes – large silver/black prismatic
Instructions:
1 Lay down a base of about 3 layers of thread from the hook eye to the bend and finish with thread at the eye.
2 Turn the hook over, select 8-10 strands of UV sparkleflash and tie-in at the mid point on the near side of the hook. Double the end that extends past the hookeye back down the far side of the shank and tie down. Hold the materials in place and wrap thread over materials for about 1cm.
3 Take a bunch of white Kinkyfibre (about the thickness of a match when squeezed together) and taper the cut end by drawing the ends of some of the fibres out.
4 Lay the material down the near side of the hook shank and fix at the mid point. Wrap the thread up to the hook eye. Fold the material that extends past the hookeye down the far side of the hook and secure with the thread. Over wrap the head area (for about 10mm behind the eye) with two layers of thread to secure and leave thread at the rear of the head.
5 Turn the hook over. Select 6-8 strands of flashabou (the doubled length should be slightly longer than the belly) and lay the materials on top of the hook so that the mid-point is just behind the eye. Wrap with thread up to the eye, double the other half back over itself and secure with thread by wrapping back to the end of the head.
6 Tie-in sparse amounts of the topping colours in the following order and using the same attachment method. The first colour should be slightly shorter than the belly and the subsequent colours progressively shorter. Remember to taper the materials before attaching.
Light blue mixed with 6 strands of UV blue pearl sparkleflash, dark blue, purple, black.
7 Take a short bunch of red streamer hair (should extend just past the hook bend) and tie in on the near side of the head. Before overbinding to secure, flare the rear out slightly. Repeat the process of the far side of the head. Overbind the head area with two layers of thread and whip finish.
8 Comb to blend colours and pinch the body materials flat and apply the eyes.
9 Hold the materials flat and apply a light coat of epoxy or silicone over the head and eyes up to the hook bend.
