Instructions:

Feather Preparation: Select eight to ten saddle feathers – check that they are not twisted and preferably with broad tips. Sort into two separate stacks – right and left curves. Dip one feather into water and lay it on the table. Wet second feather and lay it on top of the first ensuring that the tips are even. Repeat process until both stacks are aligned. When finished measure for the correct length, trim the butts and remove any fluff. Combine the two sets of feathers so that the curves face each other and the tips are even.

Tie in the prepared set of tail feathers on top of the hook shank above the hook barb. Tie in two to three doubled strands of pearl flash on each side of the feathers and trim so that they extend about two-thirds the length of the feather tail. Wind the tread to behind the hook eye.

Attach braid one and a half hook eye widths behind the eye and over wrap the braid with thread back to bend of hook. Return thread to start point. Wind the braid along the shank, tie off and trim excess.

Tie in white bucktail underneath the hook so that it is evenly distributed up both sides of the hook. It should extend to about half the length of the tail.

Tie in 2-4 strands (doubled) of red flash on the bottom of the hook. Extend only to the hook point.

Tie in white bucktail on top of hook and evenly distribute it down both sides of the hook. It should extend to about half the length of the fly.

Tie in 3-4 strands (doubled) of pearl flash on top of hook. On top of the silver tie in 5-8 strands (doubled) of emerald flash. The flash should extend to about two-thirds the length of the fly.

Form a neat sloping head with thread, whip finish and cut off. Wrap a few turns of clear mono thread behind eyes. Apply a stick-on eye on the side of the head and criss-cross with thread to secure. Repeat the process with the other eye, whip finish and apply a small amount of head cement. If using 3D eyes, the mono thread need not be used. Using a pair of small pliers, gently squeeze the sides of the head to flatten the surfaces slightly will make the application of the eyes easier.

Coat the head with a thin coat of epoxy.
