Saltwater Fly Pattern

FLATS CHARLIE

Variation of Bob Nauheim's original "Crazy Charlie" Pattern

This pattern has been used to great effect in shallow water. In the Weipa area it is deadly for golden trevelly, queenfish, blue salmon, threadfin and giant herring to name a few.

Hook:
#2 – #2/0 Gamakatsu or SL12S or Mustad C70SD

Thread:
Flat waxed in colour to match wing

Materials:
Body – estaz chenille
Wing - light tan, yellow or white bucktail
Flash – gold polarflash for tan, pearl krystalflash for white and yellow
Eyes – barbell or bead chain

Instructions:
1. Tie eyes on using figure of eight wraps about one hook eye width behind hook eye and wrap the thread ead thread to the bend.

2. Tie in Estaz and move thread back to the eyes.

3. Form the body by wrapping the Estaz back up to the eyes. Tie off over the eyes.

4. Double 3-4 strands of polarflash or krystalflash around the thread and tie-in in front of eyes.

5. Take a small bunch of bucktail, hand stack, cut to length (twice as long as the hook shank) and tie in front of eyes.

6. Form a neat head, whip finish, trim the tag end of the thread and apply head cement.
