GURGLER
Original pattern by Jack Gartside

Hook:
Any longshank style - # 4 to 6/0 (light gauge wire style is preferred for small flies)
Thread:
Flat waxed
Materials:
Tail – marabou, bucktail or SLF
Underbody – chenille
Overbody – closed cell foam
Instructions:
1. Start thread behind hook eye and wrap back to the bend.
2. Tie in the tail over the hook point and wrap thread back to bend.
3. Use scissors and taper the end of the foam and tie in and wrap back to bend.
4. Tie underbody material at the bend and move thread to hook eye. Apply a few drops of head cement along the length of the thread. While still wet, wrap the underbody along the shank using tight close wraps, tie off about one and a half hook eye widths behind the eye and trim excess.
5. Stretch the foam forward and tie off behind the hook eye. Use a contrasting thread to achieve a highlight.
6. Whip finish and apply a few drops of head cement to secure the finish.
7. Trim the front of the foam off at right angles to the hook shank.
NOTES:
For larger flies, glue several pieces of foam together using
clear contact adhesive and cut to the required size with a sharp razor blade.
For variation try gluing different contrasting colours together. A light coat of
Softex over the foam will add to the life of the fly. This fly has proved to be
effective for any species that will take a surface fly.
