Saltwater Fly Pattern

JIGGY HEAD

Original Pattern by Bob Popovics

Hook:
#2 to 4/0 Mustad 34011 (longshank)

Thread:
White flatwaxed (few turns of red thread behind head optional)

Materials:
Tail – bucktail or streamer hair or kinkyfibre with a little sparkleflash or krystalflash to match colour
Body – estaz chenille
Head – jiggy head to suit hook size
Eyes – prismatic to suit head recesses

Instructions:

1.   Use a pair of pliers to make a bend in the hook shank approximately one third of the length of the shank behind the hook eye.

2.   Slide the jiggy head onto hook and start the white thread behind head. Make 6-8 loose wraps of thread and use a bobkin to push the thread turns inside head. Make another 6-8 turns and repeat the process. Wind the thread immediately behind the head until it is secure.

3.   Turn the hook over. Select 4 -5 strands of flash, double around thread, tie in behind head and wind thread back to the bend in the shank.

4.   Tie the wing material in directly behind the head and overbind back to the bend. If using synthetic materials, taper the cut end by pulling some of the strands out slightly.

5.   Attach the estaz and move thread to head. Smear some head cement on the binding. Wrap the estaz up to the head, tie of, trim the excess and whip finish.

6.   To add a gill, wind 8-10 wraps of red thread immediately behind the head and whip finish. Apply head cement to secure.

7.   Fit eyes into the recesses and apply a light coat of epoxy over the eyes
