Saltwater Fly Pattern

DEL'S MERKIN

Original Pattern by Del Brown

Hook:
#2 – 6 Mustad 34007

Thread:
3/0 tan flat waxed

Materials:
Claws – two tan coloured hackle feather tips with some tan bucktail over

Flash – pearl krystalflash

Body – Tan sparkle yarn or wool

Eyes – Brass or nickel barbell

Legs – Round rubber or thin rubber bands

Instructions:

1   Tie eyes on top of hook shank just behind the hook eye. Add a drop of Super Glue to secure.

2   Move the thread to the bend and tie in the two hackle tips so that they curve outward.

3   Add a few strands of flash and bucktail between the hackles.

4   The body is formed by tying in several short pieces of yarn using figure of eight wraps. Start at the hook bend and tie in the first piece and move forward slightly and tie in another piece. Each piece should be perpendicular to the shank. Continue until the hook shank if full between the tail and the eyes.

5   Move the thread in front of the eyes and whip finish. Apply head cement to secure.

6   Remove the fly from the vice and use a bodkin to tease the fibres of the wool apart so that the fibres stick straight out on both sides of the hook shank.

7   Use scissors to trim the body to a roughly circular shape. Take care not to cut the tails.

8   Put the fly back in the vise with the hook point up and tie in three sets of rubber legs. Tie in using a square knot around the hook shank and clear and fibres that become caught up in the knot.

9   For a more natural look, the legs can be tied in at the same time as the body however this makes the trimming more difficult.

10   Run a dab of Super Glue along the hook shank both on the top and the bottom of the fly. The tips of the legs can be coloured either red or orange using waterproof marker.

Notes:
This style can be tied in various colour combinations to imitate different species of crab.
