Saltwater Fly Pattern

POLARBEAN

Pattern by Nial Logan

Hook:
Gamakatsu SL12S, Mustad

Thread:
white flat waxed

Materials:
Tail - white polarfibre
Belly - white polar fibre
Back - olive, grey or apple polarfibre
Laterial line - silver or UV green sparkleflash
Eyes - silver/black prismatic
Body finish - Allclear silicone thinned with lighter fluid until runny and “hard as nails” nail polish
Note: For a full “silver effect” use silver to cover the white belly, and either yellow pearl sparkleflash or polarflash 2012 (aqua rainbow) over green on the back

Instructions:

1. Commence thread behind the head and wrap a base back to the bend. Take about 2 inches of .030 lead wire and wrap around the shank starting one hook eye width behind the eye.

2. Cut a small clump of white polarfibre from the patch, hold it by the tips and comb out the short fibres at the butt. To get a tapered shape, even out the tips by pulling out the long strands and hand stack.

3. Attach the tail over the hook point so that it extends by about a shank length past the bend.

4. Turn the hook over in the vice.

5. Take another clump (about half the size of a pencil at the butt) of white polarfibre, comb out the short butt fibres. Hand stack as previously until the clump is slightly longer than the hook shank. (The bunch should be fairly thick)

6. Trim the butts so that it extends from the hook eye to just past the hook bend. Attach directly behind the eye so that it covers the bottom half of the hook shank and is evenly distributed either side of the hook bend.

7. Turn the hook over in the vice.

8. Take a clump of olive polarfibre, comb out the short butt fibres and hand stack. Trim so that it slightly longer that the tail and extends to the eye. Attach directly behind the eye so that it covers the top half of the hook shank and is evenly distributed.

9. Add a few more wraps of thread and apply a little head cement to secure.

10. Comb to blend the materials and distribute them evenly around the hook shank when viewed from the front.

11. Select 3 to 5 strands of flash, double around the thread and attach directly behind the eye along the merge line of the colours of the belly and the back on the near side the fly. Trim flash to length of the tail.

12. Repeat the process on the far side of the fly.

13. If making a full “flash” version repeat the process until the belly is covered with silver. Cover the back with the required colour. Remember to taper the ends of the flash before tying in so that the “baitfish shape” is achieved.

14. Form a neat head with thread, whip finish and trim excess thread.

15. Comb the materials to straighten and even out the strands of flash.

16. Hold the materials in place and apply a very light coat of runny silicon mix to the whole body extending from the hook eye to the back of the bend of the hook. Use a toothpick or bobkin and stoke the silicon on, working in a direction from the head to the tail.

17. Attach the eyes.

18. Give it about 10 minutes to cure slightly, then apply a second light coat of silicon and allow to cure overnight.

19. Cover all the silicon treated area with a light coat of hard as nails nail polish. This will prevent the flies from sticking together in hot weather.
