BUTORAC'S SAILFISH SPECIAL

Hook:
5/0 Mustad 34007 front hook with a trailing 4/0 Mustad Biggun snelled with 100lb mono
Thread:
3/0 flat waxed white
Materials:
Tail – white bucktail on trailing hook
Wing – 16 white saddle hackles (2 lots of eight)
Lateral flash – unraveled pearl mylar
Topping – two light blue and 4 dark blue hackles.
Head – Built up thread coloured blue on top with permanent marker
Eyes – prismatic stick-on yellow/black
Popper head – white closed cell foam with 1/8 inch diameter tube through the
centre and yellow/black 3D eyes coated with softex to secure
Instructions:
1 Snell the mono to the trailing hook and over bind with thread to secure and whip finish.
2 Put the leading hook in the vice and lay a base of thread form the eye to the bend.
3 Position the trailing hook so that it is about 4cm behind the front hook, hold it upside down, secure the mono to the front hook at the bend and bind it down to the top of the shank up to half way along the shank, double the tag end of the mono back and bind down securely with 3-4 layers of tight layers of thread.
4 Whip finish and coat the bind on both hooks with a light coat of epoxy
5 Attach a bunch of bucktail (size of a pencil) to the trailing hook. Make sure that the hair shrouds the hook point to prevent the feathers tail wrapping. Whip finish and apply cement.
6 Position one stack of feathers on the near side of the front hook with the curves facing in and the cut end half way along the shank. Secure with thread back to the bend, Attach the second bunch on the far side with the curves facing in and secure with thread. Wrap thread over both bunches up to the mid point.
7 Use unraveled mylar and attach along both sides of the fly.
8 Lay two light blue hackles flat on top of the white and secure with thread
9 Lay four dark blue hackles on top of the light blue and tie in
10 Form a sloping head of thread up to the eye of the hook
11 Colour the top half of the head with blue marker, apply the eyes and give the head a coat of epoxy.
12 The popper head is slipped onto the shock tippet
and held in place between 1 and 12 inches ahead of the fly by means of a nail
knot tied on the shock tippet
