Saltwater Fly Pattern
RICHARDS' SARDINE

Original pattern by Carl Richards

Hook:
#2 to #1 Mustad 34007

Thread:
Monofilament

Materials:
Body – silver or pearl body wrap
Tail – white polafibre
Belly – white polafibre
Wing – olive polafibre
Eyes – prismatic silver/black

Instructions:

1. Lay a base of two layers of thread along the shank.

2. Take a small amount of white polafibre, hand shack to even the tips, trim so that it is about the same length as the shank of the hook, add 3-4 strands of UV green pearl and tie-in over the hook barb.

3. Tie in the body wrap at this point and move the thread back to the hook eye. Wrap the body material around the shank and tie off at one hook eye width behind the eye.

4. Turn the hook over. Select a small piece of white polafibre , hand stack to even the tips, cut to length (should only extend as far as the bend), tie-in by the butts just behind the hook eye.

5. Turn the hook over. Take a piece of olive polafibre, remove the long ends and cut to length (extends just past the bend). Tie-in just behind the hook eye. Form a small head and whip finish.

6. Pinch the olive wing forward to make a steep forehead and attach the eyes. They should be positioned above the centre line of the fly.

7. Carefully apply a small amount of epoxy to cover the eyes, forehead and just the binding on the bottom of the fly. If desired, use a red marker to indicate the gill openings.
