Saltwater Fly Pattern

SLIM JIM

Original pattern by Page Rogers

Hook:
#2 to 1/0 Mustad 34011 or Owner Spinnerbait

Thread:
White flat waxed

Materials:
Tail – white polarfibre or SLF
Body – white round body foam 1/4inch diameter covered with pearl mylar tube and coloured on top with green permanent marker. Pearl lateral scale down both sides of body
Finish - epoxy of entire body
Eyes – prismatic gold/black or silver/black

Instructions:
1. Cut a piece of foam to length – extends from hook eye to tie-in point between point and barb.

2. Heat a large diameter needle and make a hole down through the center of the foam.

3. Put the hook in the vise and build up a base of thread along the entire length of the shank.

4. With the thread between the hook point and the barb tie in a bunch of polarfibre so that it extends by a distance equivalent to length of the hook past the bend. Remember to hand stack the fibres prior to attaching. Whip finish and trim the thread.

5. Take the foam cylinder and work it over the eye and down the shank twisting while doing so.

6. Slide the foam back along the shank. Apply a few drops of Superglue to the thread along the shank and quickly move the foam body back into place.

7. Use the green marker and colour the top half of the foam along its entire length.

8. Cut a piece of mylar tube – cut so it is about 10mm longer than the body. Carefully slide it over the body until it is centered, taking care not to fray the ends. The ends which protrude past the body will be trimmed later.

9. Apply a light coat of epoxy to the whole body and while it is still tacky position the eyes and the lateral line material down the centre of both sides.

10. Trim the ends of the mylar flush with the end of the body. Finish with another light coat of epoxy and rotate until dry.
