Saltwater Fly Pattern

SPINSTER

Original pattern by George Glazenor

Hook:
#1 to 5/0 Owner 60 degree jig hook

Thread:
Black flat waxed

Materials:
Tail – 4 black or dark purple saddle hackles

Flash – Glow in the dark Flashabou

Body – red chenille

Wing – red or orange range bucktail

Belly – pink or apricot bucktail

Eyes – 3D red/black

Weight – 0.030 lead wire

Swivel, split ring and spinner blade to suit

Instructions:

1   Slip the eye of the swivel over the hook and place in the vice the right way up.

2   Start thread behind the bend and wrap back to over the hook point.

3   Apply 6 wraps of lead wire, starting half way along the hook shank and wrapping towards the eye. Overwrap with thread to secure and leave the thread over the hook point.

4   Select 6 saddle hackles and stack so that the tips are even and the curves are facing out (3 each way). Trim the butt ends - the finished length is at least twice the length of the hook. Attach on top of the hook shank over the hook point.

5   Tie in the chenille at the tie in point for the feathers and wrap it forward to the start of the lead wire. Tie off and trim excess chenille.

6   Select a small bunch of apricot bucktail, hand stack so that the tips are even, trim to about half the length of the hackles and attach on top of the lead wire (bucktail is high tied for here onwards). This is the belly of the fly

7   Turn the fly over. Select a similar sized bunch of orange bucktail, stack the tips even and cut to the same length as the previous bunch. Attach on top of the lead wire.

8   Move the thread forward to in front of the lead wire.

9 Take another small bunch of orange bucktail, even the tips and trim to ¾ the length of the previous bunch and attach in front of the lead wire.

10   Turn the hook over, select a similar sized bunch of apricot bucktail and trim to the same length as the previous step. Attach in front of the lead wire.

11   Attach 3 strands of Flashabou on either side – cut to extend just past the hook bend.

12   Slide the swivel onto the tie in point and secure using figure of eight wraps. Form a head, whip finish and apply head cement to secure.

13   Attach eyes just behind the front tie in point, not too high so that they do not intrude on the gape of the hook.

14   Apply 5-minute epoxy over the tie in around the swivel and over the eyes.

15   Attach split ring and spinner blade
