Saltwater Fly Pattern

Tube Fly

Originated by Cam Sigler Snr

Hook:
6/0 Owner

Thread:
White flat waxed

Materials:
Tube – 6cm of 1/8 inch hard style high pressure tubing and 3cmm of soft tubing

Tail – 2 or three contrasting colours of marabou (pink/purple, green/blue etc)
Hackles – 2 colours matching the marabou
Lateral line – yellow Witchcraft Witchhair mini flash
Foam head – Edgewater T-shape popper
Head – epoxy over thread
Eyes – 15mm oval silver/black

Instructions:

1   Tie the soft tubing to the end of the hard tubing ensuring that the soft tubing protrudes by ½ inch. The hook will secure into the soft tubing.

2   Tie in six yellow saddle hackles onto the bottom of the tube

3   Tie in six green hackles followed by six blue on top. Advance the thread over the ends of the hackles to secure

4   Tie in a clump of yellow marabou on the bottom , green on the sides and blue on the top. The materials should not be tied closer than 3cm from the front end of the tubing

5   Tie three or four pieces of witchhair down each side of the fly.

6   Build up a neat head of thread leaving 2.5 cm of tube protruding from the front of the fly and whip finish.

7   Repeat the process and produce a second identical fly.

8   On one fly, attach a pair of oval shaped eyes. Epoxy the heads of both flies.

Notes:
With the addition of the T-shaped popper in front of the lead fly (the one with eyes) the result is a baitfish imitation. Alternatively, by placing the lead fly on the rear of the tandem, a very convincing squid imitation emerges.

To rig these flies, thread the popper head and one section of the fly onto the shock tippet and snell on a 6/0 hook. Slide the second section of the fly onto the tail of the line from the snell and snell on another hook which will end up in the tail of the second fly.

The flies can be swum in tandem or singularly to represent smaller baitfish
